SSA adds new level to mattress labeling program

SSA Level IV sealThe Specialty Sleep Association has added a fourth seal to its Environmental & Safety labeling program for mattresses.

“The new Level IV seal of approval provides further substantiation to consumers who are seeking finished mattresses that are fully certified as organic by the third parties recognized by the USDA,” said Dale Read, SSA president.

The purpose of the program, he added, is “to walk manufacturers through the process of substantiating each of their ‘green’ claims; it is designed to support truth in marketing to the benefit of both the consumer and the manufacturer.”

According to a news release, beds that earn a Level IV seal must have “95% certified organic and bio-based materials in the fabric, quilt and (noninnerspring) core;” third-party certification of the finished mattress; and testing for volatile organic compounds.
