Mattress industry revenues bump up in December, show slight increase for the year

The International Sleep Product Association’s December Bedding Barometer reports that U.S. mattress sales rose 7% to $414.6 million in December, while unit sales rose 4.8%, as compared with the same month in 2012.

Average unit selling prices of mattresses and foundations showed an increase of 2.1% to $221.86 in December, as compared with the same month of the previous year. Taken individually, the AUSP for mattresses was $346.56, an increase of 4%; the AUSP for foundations was $80.15, a 3.6% decrease, as compared with December 2012.

Full year unit shipments for 2013 rose slightly, showing an increase of 1.5% as compared with full-year 2012. Wholesale revenues for 2013 rose 2.1% to $5.47 billion, as compared with full-year 2012.  The full-year AUSP was relatively flat, rising just 0.5% as compared with the prior year. AUSP for mattresses rose 2.7% and AUSP for foundations showed a significant decrease of 7.5%, as compared with full-year 2013.

The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for *14 U.S. mattress producers and provides monthly and year-to-date information compared to prior-year performance for the same group of companies, as well as a regional breakdown. The participating companies accounted for 70% of the mattress units shipped and 78.5% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2013. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry.
