ISPA Revamps Mattress Industry Statistics Program

ISPA to launch Bedding Market Quarterly. Report to maximize market coverage and improve usability

ISPA revamps mattress industry statisticsBeginning in 2016, mattress industry trade group the International Sleep Products Association will replace its monthly Bedding Barometer with Bedding Market Quarterly. This new report comes as a response to member feedback on the need to improve the content and usability of bedding industry statistics.

In explaining some of the reasons behind these changes, ISPA President Ryan Trainer said that monthly data previously reported in Bedding Barometer often fluctuated from one month to the next—which could result from differences in the number of workdays or sales holidays in a given month from one year to the next, changes in the timing of floor sample shipments, regional weather conditions, etc.

The monthly numbers were of limited value because they could give an inaccurate impression of market dynamics, which also could lead to interpretative difficulties and market confusion. Reporting mattress industry sales on a quarterly basis instead will average out these month-to-month differences and result in more accurate and reliable information about changes in the mattress market.

In addition to adopting a frequency that aligns with industry best practices, Bedding Market Quarterly users will benefit from more comprehensive and useful data presented in a visually appealing format with enhanced accessibility.

“ISPA member surveys tell us that the industry wants better access to the statistical data we publish, and they are looking for different kinds of information that will help them respond to ever-changing market dynamics. Our decision to move to quarterly reporting is an exciting development for ISPA, our members and those who rely on our data and analysis,” Trainer said. “Bedding Market Quarterly will provide ISPA members and subscribers with more useful data that also aligns with industry reporting practices. We will strive to stay at the leading edge of bedding industry reporting and believe this new quarterly report will add value for our members.”

Plans for the new report include:

• Simplify mattress data reporting to include total mattress sales on a quarterly basis, replacing monthly reports and innerspring vs. noninnerspring categories.

• Include more accurate data on imported mattresses. Previously, ISPA published official U.S. import data for mattresses, which included a mixture of both human and pet beds. ISPA has worked with U.S. Customs and others to develop different reporting criteria that will provide more accurate data focused only on imported human mattresses.

• Eliminate the innerspring/noninnerspring information. The mattress market has evolved from one divided into distinct innerspring and noninnerspring sectors to one that offers a diverse range of products sold at all price points that can contain steel innersprings, a variety of foam and other cushioning materials and/or specialty components. Providing a single mattress sales number—complemented by a separate price point analysis that describes what share of the market is being merchandised at different price ranges—will provide a more comprehensive analysis of changing market conditions for premium and nonpremium mattresses. This change also will be reflected in ISPA’s annual report.

• Help ISPA members and subscribers access information faster and more easily by making the reports more versatile and user-friendly.

ISPA is making these changes now as it begins to implement forthcoming updates to its strategic plan to enhance a key member value proposition.

ISPA’s statistical program (paywall) includes the new Bedding Market Quarterly, Mattress Industry Forecast (a semi-annual forecast of industry shipments) and its Annual Report of Sales and Trends, which takes a comprehensive look at current and historical mattress industry statistics and performance.
