Mattress manufacturer Sound Sleep Products was granted a patent for STA-Fresh, a breathable, foam comfort layer for mattresses. Originally a component in the company’s AGT gel memory-foam beds, STA-Fresh now is used across a broader array of Sound Sleep beds.
The patented technology consists of two interlocking pieces of foam “engineered in a way … that creates a bellows action (directing) warm moist air out and cool dry air into … the mattress’s comfort layers,” according to a news release from the Sumner, Washington-based company.
“The patent is a big step for the company because consumers value breathable layers and the design has broad application potential,” said John Larsen, Sound Sleep president.
The company also has applied for a patent on its engineered Contour Correct foam core used in its Sweda and AGT beds.
“Most specialty foam mattresses have a simple slab of polyurethane foam as the support system,” Larsen said. “The Contour Correct core is engineered to provide anatomically correct support that the consumer is not currently being offered.”
