Outlook: U.S. mattress sales to rise

Both the quantity and dollar value of U.S. mattress shipments are expected to grow this year and in the coming two years, according to a new mattress industry forecast from the International Sleep Products Association.

business people pushing a graph upwardISPA’s forecast panel predicts that unit shipments (mattresses and foundations) will increase 6.5% in 2012, with the wholesale dollar value of those shipments growing by 10.5%. The estimate is based on data from the first eight months of the year.

For 2013, the panel forecasts a 2.3% gain in units shipped and 6.3% growth in the value of those shipments. In 2014, the panel predicts unit shipments will increase 4.5%, with the dollar value rising 8.5%.

“Notably, the 2012 value of mattress shipments is forecast to surpass the industry’s 2007 levels, and the units shipped in 2014 will remain just below 2007 levels,” according to the forecast. The dollar value of U.S. mattress sales reached record levels in 2007.

The average unit selling price is projected to increase 4% in 2012 and to continue growing at that rate in both 2013 and 2014.

The forecast is based on ISPA’s econometric model of the industry, which statistically links the mattress industry with the larger home furnishings market and the national economy.
